I was looking at a site today and read some rather disturbing info on legalised red light districts and pornography in Canberra. Can anyone please advise if this info is accurate as I find it quite disturbing seeing as my family and I will be moving to Canberra shortly. Saw the other night that you may be arrested for prostitution in any state except NSW where it is legal.
In all liklihood you will be there at some point. It even has a couple churches and Koorong books which is the largest Christian book shop franchise in Australia. I worked in Fyshwuck for over a year. Although there are quite a few 'adult shops' in the area and few 'bars' which could be some sort of brothel, it is unlikely that you will see many prostitutes selling themselves in the middle of the day. It is also unlikely that you would ever travel to Fyshwick later then 5 pm because there is simply no reason to.
There are no shops open past that time and no restaurants. You wouldn't even go through that suburb to reach another, as there are more direct routes around it. Fyshwuck is also not near any residential suburbs so the activities are unlikely to venture near homes etc. I actually never knew that prostitution was legal in the ACT, although I was aware of Fyshwick's reputation for prostitution.
Well I, from a Christian stand point do not agree with prostitution, it is unlikely to ever really affect most canberrans, and certainly not something I would be overly concerned with from the standpoint of protecting my family. I also think that that information is key And you can protect your kids by avoiding the specific shops, by avoiding the main road they are in etc.
The Auldt shops are in the back streests of Fyschwick, never seen any prostitues either Fyschwick is nothing like a prostitution area in SA , it is only light industry For instance, I know that in Melbourne it is mostly around the St Kilda area, and although I have lived here for 14 years, I have never found it to be a "in your face" situation. As you drive around Melbourne, you will see many x-rated shops, however, unless you go shopping there, you will not know what is inside.
